TSA to Require 'Real ID' with Background Checks for Domestic Flights in 2016

Just for due diligence, I checked the DHS website, and I gather that sometime in 2016 a regular non-Real-ID photo driver's license will not be enough to board an airplane, you will need something else, such as a passport.

Here is the quote from the DHS site Real ID timetable:

Phase 4: Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft:
A driver’s license or identification card from a noncompliant state [i.e., not Real ID] may only be used in conjunction with a second form of ID for boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft

TSA currently accepts other forms of identity documents such as a passport or Permanent Residency Card and will continue to do so.
